What Is the Gospel? The Good News of Jesus Explained Simply

By Daniel Ziedins · DanielZiedins.com

What is the Gospel? A clear, Bible-based explanation of the good news of Jesus: 1 Corinthians 15, the gospel of the kingdom, grace through faith, what the Gospel is not, and how to respond.

Published

The Gospel is the good news that God, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, forgives sinners, makes them new and brings them into His kingdom, as a free gift received by faith. "Gospel" translates the Greek euangelion, "good news": not good advice about what we must do, but an announcement of what God has done.

It is the centre of the Christian faith. Paul called it "the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). Here is what it says, in plain words.

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3–4

The Gospel in four movements

  • God: made us and loves us. God created the world good and made people in His image, for relationship with Him (Genesis 1:27).
  • Sin: we turned away. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God, and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). We can't fix it by trying harder.
  • Jesus: God came to rescue us. Jesus, God the Son, lived a perfect life, died on the cross in our place, and rose from the dead. "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
  • Response: turn and trust. "Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:15). Salvation is received, not earned: "it is by grace you have been saved, through faith... it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8–9).

The gospel of the kingdom

Jesus began His ministry "proclaiming the good news of the kingdom" (Matthew 4:23). The Gospel isn't only about where we go when we die. It announces that God's rule has broken into the world in Jesus: the King has come, sin and death have been defeated at the cross and the empty tomb, and everyone who trusts Him is "rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the Son he loves" (Colossians 1:13).

That's why the Gospel changes everything about a life, not just its ending. Forgiveness, new birth (see what it means to be born again), a new family in the church, and a mission: to make this good news known (the Great Commission).

Why it is good news

  • It's about what God has done, not what we must do. Every other message says "try harder". The Gospel says "it is finished" (John 19:30).
  • It's for anyone. "Whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). No one is too far gone.
  • It's historical. It rests on events: a real death and a real resurrection, which Paul says were witnessed by many (1 Corinthians 15:5–8).
  • It gives a living hope. Because Jesus rose, death is not the end for those who trust Him (1 Peter 1:3).

What the Gospel is not

  • Not good advice. Advice tells you what to do; news tells you what has happened.
  • Not "be a good person". No one is saved by being good enough (Titus 3:5). Good works follow salvation; they don't buy it.
  • Not a promise of an easy life. Jesus promised His presence and peace, not the absence of trouble (John 16:33).
  • Not a religious membership. It's a relationship with a living Saviour and Lord, joined to His people.

How do you respond to the Gospel?

Jesus' own summary is the clearest: repent and believe. Turn from running your own life, trust that Jesus died for your sin and rose again, and receive Him as your Saviour and Lord. You can tell God this in your own words; there is no special formula. Then tell another Christian, start reading the Gospel of John (here's how), and find a healthy local church.
