To be born again means to receive new spiritual life from God through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not turning over a new leaf or joining a religious group. It is God's work: the Holy Spirit makes a person spiritually alive, forgives their sin, and brings them into His family. Jesus said it is the only way to see the kingdom of God.
Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
John 3:3
Where the phrase comes from: Jesus and Nicodemus
The phrase comes from a night-time conversation in John 3. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council, a respected teacher who knew the Scriptures. He came to Jesus with compliments. Jesus answered with a statement that cut through all of it: no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
The Greek word translated "again" (anōthen) can also mean "from above". Both meanings are true: it is a second birth, and it comes from God. Nicodemus took it literally ("Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb!"), so Jesus explained: "no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit" (John 3:5–6).
The point lands hard: if a man as devout as Nicodemus needed new birth, then religion, effort and good reputation can't produce it. Everyone needs it, and it has to come from God.
What changes when someone is born again
The New Testament describes new birth in several ways, each showing a different side of the same gift:
- A new creation. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- A new heart. God promised through Ezekiel to give "a new heart and put a new spirit in you" (Ezekiel 36:26), the promise Jesus was pointing Nicodemus to.
- A new family. "To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent... but born of God." (John 1:12–13)
- A living hope. God "has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (1 Peter 1:3)
- Renewal by the Spirit. God saved us "not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy... through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5)
Why we need to be born again
Scripture's diagnosis is that we don't just need improvement; we need life. Paul describes people apart from Christ as "dead in your transgressions and sins" and then says "because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead" (Ephesians 2:1–5). You can't coach a dead person into living. New birth is God doing for us what we could never do for ourselves.
That is why the most famous verse in the Bible comes in this same chapter, as Jesus explains to Nicodemus how new birth happens: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
How a person is born again
New birth is God's work, and we receive it through faith. John 1:12 puts it simply: those who receive Jesus and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God. In practice, the New Testament describes that response as:
- Turning from running your own life (repentance): agreeing with God about your sin and turning toward Him (Acts 3:19).
- Trusting Jesus: believing He died for your sin and rose from the dead, and receiving Him as Saviour and Lord (Romans 10:9).
- Telling God so in your own words. There is no magic formula; a prayer is simply how you tell God what is happening in your heart.

What being born again is not
- Not a self-improvement plan. It's new life from God, not a better version of the old life produced by effort.
- Not a label for one kind of Christian. Jesus said everyone who enters the kingdom of God is born again. It describes every true follower of Jesus, not a subgroup.
- Not a feeling. Some people remember a dramatic moment; others can't name the day. What matters is real trust in Jesus now, not the intensity of an experience.
- Not something you earn. "Not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy" (Titus 3:5).
Christians from different traditions understand the relationship between baptism and new birth differently, partly because of the phrase "born of water and the Spirit". All agree on the heart of it: new birth is God's gracious work, received by faith in Jesus, and it is meant to be followed by baptism and a life of following Him.
What new life looks like
Newborns grow, and so do the newly born-again. The letter of 1 John describes family resemblances of God's children: believing that Jesus is the Christ (1 John 5:1), doing what is right (2:29), and loving others (4:7). These are signs of life, not a test you pass to earn it. Growth takes time, and it happens best with others.
- Read Scripture, starting with the Gospel of John: how to read the Bible for the first time.
- Learn to pray honestly: how to pray when you don't know what to say.
- Join a local church and ask about baptism.
- Tell someone. New life is meant to be shared: how to share your faith naturally.

Quick answers
What does it mean to be born again?
It means receiving new spiritual life from God through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit makes a person spiritually alive, forgives their sin and brings them into God's family. Jesus said no one can see the kingdom of God without it (John 3:3).
Where does the Bible talk about being born again?
Mainly in John 3:1–21, where Jesus speaks with Nicodemus. The idea also appears in John 1:12–13, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Titus 3:5, 1 Peter 1:3 and 1:23, and throughout 1 John.
How do you become born again?
New birth is God's work, received through faith: turning from running your own life, trusting that Jesus died for your sin and rose again, and receiving Him as Saviour and Lord. You can tell God this in your own words.
Is "born again Christian" a different type of Christian?
No. In the Bible, being born again describes every true follower of Jesus. Jesus said no one enters the kingdom of God without it, so it isn't a subgroup or denomination.
Do you have to feel something to be born again?
No. Some people remember a dramatic moment and others don't. New birth is about real trust in Jesus, shown over time in growing faith, right living and love for others, not the intensity of a feeling.
A new beginning
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night with questions. By the end of John's Gospel, he is standing in the open, helping to bury Jesus' body with honour (John 19:39). New birth often starts quietly, with honest questions. Wherever you are today, the invitation Jesus gave him is still open: come and be made new.
